Academia

There are two types of Academic Dental careers: Research and Teaching. Most of the time these roles are combined.

Getting into dental research usually involves training in a particular dental specialty, completing research and getting publications. You will need to study for qualifications such as Diplomas, Masters and eventually a PhD.

If you are thinking about pursuing a career in academia, it is worth talking to your lecturers and professors about what it is like to work in this field and also ask for their advice around how to make yourself competitive when you come to applying.

If you wish to have a career in research, you will have an advantage if you do an intercalated degree whilst at dental school.

Getting experience in teaching is also possible whilst at dental school through various schemes. Contact the Student’s union for information on some of the schemes available.
